Many thanks to Trys for permission to post this here.

HW is a friend of mine in Florida who has cancer. She's had surgery and chemo but it is still slowly killing her. Two years ago her doctors gave up on her and told her to find a hospice. She didn't give up and has fought the disease as hard as she can using all sorts of nutrition, vitamins and supplements, but she feels that she is losing the battle.

Recently she found out about human trials of a new treatment being run by a US company. She contacted them and applied to be part of the trial. The good news is that because of the nature of her cancer she has been accepted into the trial. The bad news is that the trial is being run in India and the company doesn't pay for travel, hotel or food for the three-four week stay. Because the cancer has prevented her from working her savings are all gone.

HW is her mother's carer and also looks after several special needs cats. She's been a member of my Feline Hyperthyroid Support group for many years and in that time has given life-saving advice and support to many, many humans and cats.

I know times are tough for everyone right now but please will you help HW to get the treatment that might save her life? If you can spare even $1 it would help. If you can't afford anything (and I know that many are counting every last penny) then please would you spread the link to her Indiegogo page?

(The video on the front page is one of the cats who was saved by HW and my group.)

Prayers, positive energy and White Light will also be appreciated.

Thanks,
Penny

Hi Penny, you have my attention on this.

Hi Janny,

The news so far is that two members of my cat group have offered the use of their airmiles to pay for the flights from Tallahassee > Newark and from Newark > India so we can get HW there. The fundraiser has raised enough for her expenses in India (she has to keep herself, the trial company doesn't pay any of it) but we don't yet have enough for the hotel.

I gulped when I saw the hotel that the trial organisers says she has to use (it's right opposite the clinic where they are running the trials) because it looks really expensive but when we checked the room rates it isn't expensive by US and UK standards. My co-organiser phoned the hotel and has been offered $81 per night for a three-four week stay so we still need to raise another couple of thousand to cover it.

The stumbling block at the moment is that until we can get the hotel booked she can't get a visa for India as she has to prove she has somewhere to stay.

We're hoping HW can fly out at the end of August as the trial company have said she has to take part soon and her symptoms are also getting worse.

We'd hoped that the fundraiser would also raise enough for us to arrange for care for HW's mum and cats as we know that is going to worry her while she is away, but I think we will have to find another way around that - some neighbours have said that they will check-up on them regularly.

Penny - thanks for the update!

A sad update to this story:

After her friends rallied round, donated airmiles and money, arranged care for HW's mum and cats and dog, HW received a terrible blow. Having been told that she was a candidate for the new therapy, and with flights booked, she was told that the trial's oversight body (the FDA?) had instructed the company conducting the trial that HW's cancer was not the correct type for the trial and her case would be ineligible for inclusion in the trial results. As a result the company withdrew its offer.

To be fair to the doctor in charge of the trial he did offer to treat her anyway, but she would have to fund the treatment. The fundraiser had barely raised enough to cover basic expenses, so there was no chance of it being able to fund the treatment as well. The doctor tried to get funding elsewhere, but was unsuccessful. Others volunteered to play concerts and raise money in other ways, but that required the outlay to hire suitable venues, which no one could afford.

In the end though, it was all too little and too late. HW still clung to the hope that she would get to India and be cured, but without suitable treatment the cancer had spread throughout her body. Last September, despite her valiant struggle to fight the cancer, HW passed away.

(As a postscript to an already sad story, the friend who worked so hard to coordinate and arrange HW's flight, hotel, fundraising etc. is now struggling to find homes for HW's cats and dog. They are in Tallahassee, Florida: if anyone wants a mature cat or dog please contact me and I'll give you the Facebook page where they are all pictured.)

Thanks Mark, I appreciate it and will be sure to let her friends know (sadly, she had no family that cared about her).
