Debate for a sneak preview - pros and cons

Janny Wurts Chat Area: Arc 4: Sword of the Canon: Initiate's Trial: Debate for a sneak preview - pros and cons
By Janny Wurts on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 11:06 am: Edit Post

I am debating the merits of this, intensely.

First of all, one would NEED to have finished Stormed, how explosive an unveiling?

How cruelly do you want to be hung out to dry?

Have at it - what do you think, what do you want? How much are you willing to risk getting burned (in a tantalizingly good way, of course!)

By Clansman on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 12:42 pm: Edit Post

Do your absolute worst. I am ready, willing and able to hang on that clothes line until I am nothing but parched desert, because I know the flood will be coming!

By motley on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 04:24 pm: Edit Post

Rrrrrip off the explosives! Hang the veil! Burn the clothes!

Show a little of Arithon's leg?

By Hunter on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 04:57 pm: Edit Post

Burn.. make pain your friend..

By starstorm on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 06:47 pm: Edit Post

Surely there's no need for debate whatsoever!

We'll take whatever little tantalizing bit you're willing to share, hanging and burning notwithstanding!

By Brittani on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 07:05 pm: Edit Post

Don't worry I have some burn cream on hand for emergencies!

Just slather it on...

By Tygrr on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 07:23 pm: Edit Post

Ooh ooh ooh!!! Please!!! I always want to read more of this brilliantly entertaining story... :-) Pretty please with a cherry on top?

By Jo on Thursday, March 20, 2008 - 03:16 pm: Edit Post

I am willing to burn to a crisp for anything you can share with us Janny.

By Clansman on Thursday, March 20, 2008 - 03:27 pm: Edit Post

7 for immolation, none against. The question was called, answer has been given.

I believe that the motion is carried!

By alexith on Thursday, March 20, 2008 - 09:20 pm: Edit Post

all "pro's" and absolutely no "cons"

Part of the fun in waiting for the next books has always been the previews. Agony? yes. Bad? never.

By Erik-Berndt Scheper on Friday, March 21, 2008 - 08:52 am: Edit Post

Well, I keep coming back to see if a preview is available ... So I guess that means: yes, please.

By Janny Wurts on Friday, March 21, 2008 - 12:54 pm: Edit Post

Well, then, no detractors - the question remains, how severely do you want to get FRIED?

The date on the very first page is a spoiler, never mentioning the first dastardly line!!!

How much do you want to sweat? Do you want a mere little mystery or a mad fit of hair-tearing, riled-up, teeth-gnashing speculation?

Uh, or do you REALLY want Arithon to show some leg....he may not consent to this....mind. Authorial feedback on the mere concept is likely to flay me a good patch of skin.

By alexith on Friday, March 21, 2008 - 01:04 pm: Edit Post

"Do you want a mere little mystery or a mad fit of hair-tearing, riled-up, teeth-gnashing speculation?"

The latter of course!

At this point, I really am going to have to go back and reread the entire series, and I think I've decided to buy all the books for my sister as a b-day gift.

By Auna on Friday, March 21, 2008 - 06:20 pm: Edit Post

Do your worst!

I writhed in agony over the possible outcomes after reading book 2 in a 3 book series and had an absolutely awesome time conjuring up possible endings - none of which came close. But it was fun and agonizing at the same time and I'm always up for that kind of thing with this series too.

We are all Vulcanites, the hotter it is, the better we like it. Please note, although we may well live long and prosper (with luck) I do not mean we have pointy ears, haughty expressions, and repress our emotions.

By Jo on Saturday, March 22, 2008 - 03:29 pm: Edit Post

I just wondered how your book was doing in the publishing charts if it goes by that. Also I got hooked on these books about 3 years ago and have bought the lot. Eagerly anticipating the next.

I am happy for Arithon to show as much leg as possible. I don't thinks Arithon's consent is normally taken in to much consideration so I am sure he won't mind showing a bit of leg. Would love some mad fit of hair-tearing, riled-up, teeth-gnashing speculation?

By Sundancer on Sunday, March 23, 2008 - 01:12 pm: Edit Post

I would love to hear Arithon's response to him being asked to show a bit of leg!

I seem to recall some delightful responses to prying questions a few years ago.

Glad to see you are enjoying yourself Janny, the book must be going well if you have got previews ready.

I'm hanging out for anything, but the more open to sepculation the better!

By Neil on Monday, March 24, 2008 - 06:28 am: Edit Post

So the date is probably a few years/decades/a couple of centuries? down the line...what can these characters get up to for 500 years anyway?!?

Maybe Arithon will decide to take a long break with Elaira and some peach brandy on a sunny beach if he can find an island somewhere...for the next 200 years...or have the necromancers bagged all the best spots? Or would he check out the other 2 worlds end gates?

By Janny Wurts on Tuesday, March 25, 2008 - 08:30 pm: Edit Post

Very well, if you all want to leap in and get fried up and fricaseed - I'll go see what I can pull out as an appropriate bath in hot oil...

(have the necromancers bagged all the best spots!!!! snort!)

By motley on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 - 09:02 am: Edit Post

Imagine - the Masterbard, an Inn, a boisterous group of young bawdy girls in the front row screaming for a bit of leg... does he satirise or does he oblige?

I'm curious to see what goes on in Avenor: The aftermath...

By Neil on Thursday, March 27, 2008 - 09:36 am: Edit Post

hmm...what next...I like these ones ;-)

We have seen visions where Havish and Ath's adepts are the religion (with talented leaders but twisted beliefs?) is already beyond Lysaer and Sulfin to control perhaps.

Arithon still has to have his "pointed" discussion on a beach with a certain paravian...and perhaps "tie up" with the Koriani (selidie could last another 1000 years or so it sesms... so the clock is ticking if Arithon wishes to counter-attack)

"Broken nose" will arrive...and there was menion of sun sorceress(my words...) in the glossary of TK I think

Quesion: Will we ever meet this blind person or was she edited out due to space?

Oh and Janny, I'm *asking*, wink wink.

One last question (maybe obvious...): At the end of Traitor's Knot Did Arithon, in fact, break his "not to kill" choice. Or do necromancers not count? Presumably he is therefore still prepared to kill to save larger groups of people?

By Janny Wurts on Tuesday, April 01, 2008 - 06:04 pm: Edit Post

I came within a hairsbreadth of loading this teaser up, yesterday...and then I looked it over, and flinched. Sheesh. Yanno what you are getting yourselves IN FOR?

Seriously - this could hurt. :-)

I had to hold my ears for a sec...for anticipation of screeching and howls to hurry it up in the writing.

This book is quite, quite problematic for sneak previews....I mean, there's cliffhanging, and their's the crazed swing over the abyss....!!!

And I am - hurrying it up in the writing. The sweet news is, I'm into the next subchapter, today.

Of course, I have not forgotten the Reyaj seeress, and, the poor fellow I predicted would be in the wrong place, at the wrong time, did indeed just get his nose whomped.

By Laneth Sffarlenn on Tuesday, April 01, 2008 - 06:07 pm: Edit Post

*jumps up & down in anticipation*

I gather that means ye've either uploaded the teaser, or are doing so now? *eager grin*

BTW - I look at these "teasers" like buying another Atheran Short Story :D

By Wayne on Tuesday, April 01, 2008 - 09:04 pm: Edit Post

Of course if she did it today would it have been real??

or just an April Fools ??

By Hunter on Tuesday, April 01, 2008 - 10:21 pm: Edit Post

Missed a great opportunity to post about [deleted Stormed Fortress Spoiler], Morriel's recanting and releasing Selidie and .. many other ridiculous notions..

What would be even more excruciating for any potential spoiler is to drip feed it.. like one line a day or something.. or a word an hour..

'Of course, I have not forgotten the Reyaj seeress, and, the poor fellow I predicted would be in the wrong place, at the wrong time, did indeed just get his nose whomped'.

have i missed something?
can anyone tell me what this is about please??

By Neil on Wednesday, April 02, 2008 - 04:25 am: Edit Post

Hi Lisa,

I noticed a reference to the Reyaj seeress in Traitor's Knot in the glossary(?) or whatever it is the back of the book. Something about a talented person who uses the sun in workings and was blind due to this..I forget exactly. Curiously, this character never appeared in Traitor's Knot (where the initial reference was) nor in Stormed Fortress where I at least expected to meet her on the page.

"Broken nose" was a paravian name that Janny mentionned in passing when giving an example of an "odd" paravian letter. there is a letter representing "t-th", or something like that, and this character was used as a teaser. Quoting (more or less) JW during the writing of arc 3 : "a character that will not appear for lo, another arc...)

Now...can you tell that pulling the clues out of this series is one of my favourite past-times / obesssions?!?

By Lisa on Wednesday, April 02, 2008 - 04:41 am: Edit Post

Cheers for that Neil.

By Clansman on Wednesday, April 02, 2008 - 08:00 am: Edit Post

A hairsbreadth? In and of itself, that statement is a teaser!!

Seriously, we're WoLaS junkies out here, and we need a fix. I checked the "Excerpts" section after seeing the above posts in my inbox this morning, and:

I vote for suspension over the burning abyss! Bring it on! And I promise not to scream in anger or frustration.

By motley on Wednesday, April 02, 2008 - 11:21 am: Edit Post

Where? Where? :-)

Janny! Was that an April fool's?

By Scott Wardle on Wednesday, April 02, 2008 - 02:55 pm: Edit Post

Whenever Janny posts the teaser for us will never be soon enough so the anticipation of a snippet will have to suffice for now.

Please please please post something soon.

By Janny Wurts on Saturday, April 19, 2008 - 10:42 am: Edit Post

Well, I have not abandoned this....I just - well - am trying to FIND a passage that won't spoil too much....and even the FIRST TWO SENTENCES of this book would pitch an explosion....I have started to select a bit, several times, and each time, literally flinched.

It's a long wait, yet, for the release...!!!

You've said you don't mind the agony, but...

So, I am still mulling....there may be three paragraphs or so....finch...

Given there's close to two hundred pages of draft to choose from, you would think there'd be an innocuous bit....naah...

By Janny Wurts on Friday, July 18, 2008 - 01:36 pm: Edit Post

Ah, well, the waters are roiling here...for good reasons....maybe, just maybe, methinks, it's time for a Pop! of fun....let's see, if I mull another sneak preview, what sort of bomb should I drop that won't say way too much!

Ready for another Interesting Time?

Oh, Foul Temptress! Thou knowest well my pathetic weakness.

Satan! Get thee behind me! AAAAAAARRGH!!!!!

(shakes head, clearing it, and surrendering completely to temptation)

Yeah, I'm ready.

I usually am just a reader of the forums here, but there is one thing that will make me get on and comment-the chance of a preview/sneak peek...nothing could make my summer hotter! (And I am in AZ, where the temp is currently 110 degrees)

By Kirsten Laurelle Wallace on Saturday, July 19, 2008 - 03:25 pm: Edit Post

I would love another sneak preview. It would definately make my summer a lot better.

Janny, my birthday is next week and since I'm new to this and all, I think a sneak preview/birthday present/welcome gift is definitely in order.....Please!?!?!?!?

By Laneth Sffarlenn on Sunday, July 20, 2008 - 08:49 pm: Edit Post

I'll second that - my birthday is 8th August, so ...

By Clansman on Monday, July 21, 2008 - 07:28 am: Edit Post

Well, Janny. You have the perfect birthday present for these wonderful people.

My only request is that, in a similar vein to the start of this thread, you make this NICE AND CRISPY!!!

My eyebrows have managed to grow back after the last teaser.

By Walt on Monday, July 21, 2008 - 08:26 am: Edit Post

And as long as we're tossing out birthday incentives, mines on the 31st (39 for the 1st time)!

It'd be a wonderful way to start out my vacation with starts this Friday.

Wow.... I need to do something about my dry throat...

OOOHHH!! Fireworks! Good possiblility of getting burned with those things. Oh I'm all excited! Time to go make root beer floats and wait for the show to start! (maybe that just an American tradition, I'm not sure, But the rest of your are welcome to join me!)

Need any more nagging, Ms. Wurts?

Mine was on July 5th; would love a late July fireworks display, should one just happen along 'round here.

Oooo Fireworks, I'm always up for fireworks! :-)

By Kirsten Laurelle Wallace on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 08:39 am: Edit Post

I am definately all for fireworks; red ones, green ones, yellow. Matter of fact, I love the whole mess of them. Maybe we could have some accidental explosions too.

By Janny Wurts on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 09:28 am: Edit Post

Well now, I will look for an appropriate passage, and before Friday! (between, of course, writing the next scene). I will bear in mind the phrases, accidental explosion...fireworks...hmmmm.

It's finding the scene that's just a firework and not a bombshell of an unveiling...

And so, this space!

By Janny Wurts on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 - 11:48 am: Edit Post

I have been exploring various possible preview scenes, and they fall into several areas:

some could (potentially) expand on the last scene's impact, and make you CRAZIER still.

Some could feel like utterly NEW territory, not touch on anything that seems to fit, because you haven't seen how they connect (can't show that! Yet...) though they do, I'd just have shot a window into the story that didn't let you see the too meaty bits...

Some, well - Third Arc - it's gonna be an unveiling anyway I pull it.

Rubbing red pepper into the speculations, anywhich way I turn...the yells of impatience could get very loud, indeedy.

Any bits with Sulfin Evend? :-)

By HJ on Friday, July 25, 2008 - 04:31 am: Edit Post

Kevor and Ellaine PLEASE!!

By Janny Wurts on Friday, July 25, 2008 - 01:20 pm: Edit Post

I have two bits selected - and stewing on which, pros and cons. This book has almost no wiggle room without spoilers.

It's the birthday moment, I realize - and I'm on it.

By Clansman on Friday, July 25, 2008 - 01:38 pm: Edit Post

By Hunter on Friday, July 25, 2008 - 07:24 pm: Edit Post

It is worth noting, in passing, that previous sneak peaks have generally prompted waaaaay more questions than answers - the confrontation of Asandir and Morriel/Selidie being a perfect example - what are they doing there? why? What was the background? What are the various protagonists trying to achieve? The surrounding prose of course provides the answers but that is only available when the book is published.

So I think there are spoilers and there are spoilers. A spoiler say, where Dakar dies, would indeed be a spoiler. A spoiler with Arithon actually getting a Riathan Paravian horn through his side on a sunny, tropical beach would prompt way more questions..

By Mark Stephen Kominski on Saturday, July 26, 2008 - 02:01 am: Edit Post

Or, you could always go for something a little less.....dark.....

*Covers Janny's ears*

While I haven't read Martin's stuff yet, Hunter, I'm told he kills all his characters off with some regularity. Perhaps one such author is enough? ;)

*Uncovers Janny's ears*

Either way, a spoiler might be needed urgently to prevent my buddy the Clansman from spontaneous combustion....

By Zorana Lewis on Saturday, July 26, 2008 - 09:47 am: Edit Post

Hunter - if we actually get a snippet with Arithon getting a Riathan Paravian horn through his side on a sunny, tropical, beach, I am holding you entirely accountable! :D

*grin* I will agree with you though in regards to spoilers and spoilers. And Mark, yeah, Martin kills them off with surprising regularity. But it still shocks you whenever he does it. You tell yourself, surely not. Surely so-and-so will survive this and then kablooey! They've just been offed and you're sat in bed (or wherever you read) blinking at the page, wondering if he actually did just do that or whether you were imagining it.
