Janny Wurts Chat Area: Wars of Light and Shadow Contest: Archive through November 17, 2006

The idea is to run a "celebrate the end of the draft of Stormed Fortress" contest - a triple header, with prize(s) for each catagory:

Contest # 1 - speculate on Stormed Fortress - what do you think may happen, based on the finish of Traitor's Knot - the wild card will be: the Prize might go to the person who is closest to the actual plot OR (at My whim) the person who is furthest off base. You will get to find out which when the book comes out. Plausible guesses only, please....this would make it more fun!

Contest #2 - Wars of Light and Shadows trivia - several questions will be posed, from ALL existing material - the person who gets em all right, first, wins.

Contest #3 - Paravian translation. We've done this before. You have the books, the glossaries, and the online dictionary to work from - plus what's in the language discussions on this site. I provide the phrase in Paravian (English characters, not Paravian, to make it easier)- you take a stab at translation.

First Prize: signed hardbound, Peril's Gate
Second Prize: a laminated color bookmark, done to match the cover of one of the editions.

If you like the ideas of these little bits of fun, say so. If you have a better idea of what sort of contest you'd LIKE - yell - the suggestion may just be acted upon.

Kick off for these contests - sometime this weekend, when feedback arises, and when I assemble the appropriate material.

Janny, it's really nice of you to take the time to do this sort of thing.

I would much rather the 1st prize was a copy of Stormed Fortress ;-)

1) The speculation...we can but try.
2) The trivia...it's fun to see snippets we may have missed.
3) The paravian translations always seem to reveal another part of the mechanics of the paravian perception.

So yes! I *like* these little bits of fun. It makes waiting for the books a little easier.

The speculation option sounds very much like a lot of fun! Not sure any of my guesses in the past have been accurate but no harm in trying!!

In terms of plot speculation, would you want the whole novel, or pick a key sub-plot or two and try to develop it? e.g. what Jeynsa might do, where Fionn might end up.. Throw a Paravian or two into the mix just for fun!

The trivia question option would also be fun.. another excuse to dive into the books and get side tracked for a chapter or three..

What I like about the speculation contest is that a person's speed in posting doesn't affect the outcome. For example, the winner of the trivia contest will most likely be the one who sees the question and is able to look up the answer first.

Of course there may be some who know the answer of the top of their head and will not need to look it up.

But I'm open to any of these... it would definitely be fun!

Ooh, I really enjoyed the last Paravian translation puzzle. Looking forward to another! =)

I like the trivia contest idea, namely because I am far better at that than I am at either speculating or translating.

Would love the speculating and trivia contest. I had a look at the translating section and really didn't get it so i know I'll be useless at that one. Look forward to it though. Would you do it over a few days because of time differences?

I think this is way of base, and nothing to do with this thread, but have you had any thoughts, janny, of putting to gether a set of cards or rune stones or suchlike decipiting the paravian runes as a sort of game or oracular device? Of course you could also put together a set of tarot cards with paintings of the like of ashanidir as the magican, daker as the page of cups, etc.etc,... maybe when your project has finished.
By the way congratulations on finishing your draft, snoopy dance, anyone?

A Trivia contest sounds great!

Well, my weekend got a little full, so I didn't post back as I'd hoped, but the benefit - I got to hear more from you!

My plan was to do All Three contests, side by side.
This will take some planning on my part. So bear with me, I'll have to fit that into my schedule.

On Bart's request for cards, runes - oracular games, I had not given thought.

You already have the tarot. Already have runes.

Fitting such an existing system "overtop" of Atheran mythscape - just doesn't quite "fit" the existing map. Made me pull the oddest sort of smile, in fact, just thinking on your suggestion!

Neither do the Paravian runes work as you suggest.

I would like, one day, to place them into a format that readers could share and understand...they key strictly to sound.

I do know it's the current rage to take any topic and make an oraclular device from it.

I don't have problems with that concept in any way.

Just, I have other directions and plans to take the creation in hand, while can appreciate and respect your suggestion.

Thanks for the nice words to me about the finish of Stormed Fortress.

Janny
'Snoopy dance all around the world'
I appreciate your appreciation, I'm getting weirdly excited at your sound explanation. My suggestion in hindsight would just cheapen the Paravian runic structure and beauty.
I'm currently learning to play the bodhrán, and am getting a new appreciation to the nuances of sound and music. When now I listen to suchlike I'm beggining to listen more intently.
I'm glad I made you smile. Your smile makes me smile. Say hello to your cat.
Looking forward to the comp.

Hi Janny

I missed the last Paravian puzzle, so am looking forward to this one.

When do you plan to hold the competition?

Jude

Soon as I rip through the cut down on this chapter - a day or so, probably.

The contests are up. Three separate contests listed at the top of this page.

The Stormed Fortress: Speculation contest consists of one message page.

The Trivia contest has three pages so that it will be easier to keep answers segregated. I'll be accumulating the answers by submitter.

The Paravian Language Translation contest has one message page.

Enjoy!!

Trys

Laughing....wow those need some serious rereading...and sadly I don't have time :-(

I note that it is 2 years since I read Traitor's knot (Amazon's order history means I don't need to keep a reading blog to remember when I was reading someting ;-)
