House cleaning time is just around the corner. I am takin vacation at the end of May and plan to spend some time going through the various topics and extracting the interesting bits and deleting ages old posts and threads. This house cleaning will also include the deletion of user accounts that have not seen activity in the last year and don't have e-mail notification flags set.

So if there's any thread that you want to save, now's the time. :-)

There is an online interview of Janny done by Jana Oliver of Leisure Talk Radio located at http://www.magespell.com/podcast/CRMsh17.mp3. This is an MP3 file.

This interview is very interesting as Janny discusses the publication industry.

The major housecleaning is done. I started by having the board delete any post that was older than 365 days and followed up by cleaning out any topics that were fragemented (i.e., didn't make much sense without the prior posts deleted). This has resulted in some top level topics having few or no posts. I will be processing through the archived posts and will construct information to put back into those topics.

Announcement:

What: I am moving paravia.com to a new a host.
When: Weekend starting September 23rd, 2005.
Why: The current host has become somewhat unreliable especially in the customer support department and is over priced in today's market.

What does all of this mean to you the visitor? The website and the Chat Area may be down during a period of time after the actual transfer of the domain. I will do my best to minimize that time but I'm at the mercy of the system.

For those who are interested here are the steps I'll be following:

1) Signup for a domain transfer with the new host.
2) Place the Chat Area in maintenance mode.
3) Backup the Chat Area.
4) Upload the website to the new host.
5) Install the Discus software.
6) Restore the Chat Area posts to the new host.

The move has been finished. So far as I can tell evertying is now functional except the counters which I need a to configure to work on the new host.

The counters have now been replaced. They are not the update while watching kind but they are work which I could not get the others to do.

The direct path to the Chat Area is:

Everyone can now come back. :-)

The board got spammed this morning with a multitude of posts regarding online card playing. I've cleaned out the posts and banned the IP address (194.165.130.93). Hopefully this will prevent future spamming from that location but not block legitimate visitors who want to post on the board. If it does if the individual will contact me we can discuss lifting the block.

An editorial comment, I've come to the conclusions that spammers should be banned from the Internet for life. Yes, I realize it would be virtually impossible to enforce but it sure would be a nice deterrant to these kinds of anti-social activities if it could be.

The board has been spammed again. Posting is turned off. I'm sorry to have to do this but I need to see if this will stop the spamming. It will likely be a couple of days at least before I turn it back on.

So let's give it a try. If spamming happens again the I'll try setting the board so that only registered users can post to the topics. Then if spamming occurs I'll know who the culprit is.

I found an interesting option that will likely make my life a little more irritated but should keep the spam out and allow the board to function mostly the way it is now...

Registered users will be able to login and post messages and they should appear immediately. Anyone who posts without a user account or who has a user account but posts without it using will not see their posts immediately. They will queue up and not appear until I approve them.

Hopefully this will work.

The queuing of non-registered users messages appears to be working. I recommend that anyone who doesn't want to have to wait for their posts to be cleared from the queue should register as user.

My profound apologies for those of you who use the e-mail notification feature of this board to get the messages sent to you. Hopefully it is has been fixed.

Due to the very large of number spams queuing up (in excess of 500 a day) I do not feel confident that I won't delete a legitimate public post so I've change the board so that only registered users can post to the board. All a non-registered user need do is click on the Register link to the left and create a user ccount. Be aware the board will display your 'real' name with your posts, so you may want to use a nickname there.

I've received an e-mail inquiry from one individual on three separate occasions (March 20, 2006, May 19, 2006, and November 13, 2006) regarding not receiving automatic e-mails updates from topics marked to send e-mails. I've tested this feature and it works fine. This means that a spam filter is likely the reason why the e-mails are not getting through. Nothing I can do on my end and the spam filters that would be blocking these mails is on the individual's end... either their ISP or their e-mail client.
