Interactive Map

Janny Wurts Chat Area: General Discussion: Interactive Map
By Trys on Monday, November 21, 2005 - 11:52 am: Edit Post

I've just added a new feature to the website, an interactive map of the continent of Paravia. It is available as a top level item in the menu and the first page is instructional with a link at the bottom to get to the actual map.

To enhance the enjoyment and maybe enable everyone to have a little fun, please feel free to report, in this thread, the places that you find.

Be aware, some of them are not so easy to locate. <weg> For this reason please refrain from reporting where you found something so as to not ruin the fun for others.

I'll keep track of those found and let you know when the last has been located.

Enjoy!!

Trys

All RIIIIGGHHTT!! :-O

I hope this does mean we'll still be getting a large size paper map we can order and pin to the walls?

I'll need something to refer to if the power goes out...

Trys-a million thanks! It's absolutely fantastic. Now to find time to look at it! Christmas has come early for me.

Try, you are the best!

The interactive map is one big playground for WoLaS fans - it will be a great resource when re-reading the books.

I just had a quick peek around but my favourites are places with sketches attached to the pop-up.... the ones I got to are: Methisle, Alestron, Kelhorn Peaks and Rowelle. Thanks again!

Glad everyone is enjoying the map.

So that we are all speaking the same language, when you indicate that you found a pop-up, could you identify it by the title of the pop-up... to avoid confusion for me. :-)

What fun! Can't wait for my family to leave so I can explore in depth!

So lovely to be able to zoom in "to the max".

By YT on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 - 11:10 am: Edit Post

Hmmm... I'm surprised no one has finished this off yet, considering it's been up for a year and a half.

So, I took a bit of time to hunt down the remaining two locations:

1. Jaelot
2. Harbor and Ruin - Corith

By Trys on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 - 02:08 pm: Edit Post

Hunter already identified Corith. It's been so long since I put this up I'm going to have to spend a little time to make sure they've all been found. :-)

Trys or Janny,
What are the units of measurement on the map?
Thanks
Geoff

By Brian Uri! on Friday, April 17, 2009 - 11:22 am: Edit Post

If I recall correctly, the map is in leagues, with 3 miles to one league.

Thanks Brian, so that's what, 4.8 km to the league. Cool

Talking about the map, has anyone else wondered about the section that borders Melhalla, Rathain and Havish?, it is even close to the Tysan border at one point?. It seems odd as the kingdom borders actually go around this area.

Also wondered about the fact that Rathain has two world send gates, But Tysan and Shand have one each leaving Havish and Melhalla without a gate. Cannot be by accident so what could be the significance.

Janny was asked about this on another thread, as I recall. She cackled with glee and wouldn't tell us, so we are left guessing until IT comes out (or, perhaps Destiny's Conflict, or Song of the Mysteries).

We'll find out, some day. SOME DAY SOON!

By Annette on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 - 05:42 pm: Edit Post

I am not expecting to discover who takes up residence in the middle of the map till near the end of Destiny's Conflict, or even the start of Song of the Mysteries. So might not be soon if we have to wait till the last book. Janny has not mentioned where she is up to on Destiny's Conflict yet, but I am not counting on seeing it in anything under 2 years, probably it would take longer.

It would be nice if the grimward near Cainford could be put on the interactive map.

Are any of these related to the lanes or Ath's Brotherhood hostels?

I'm hoping, in my 'copious spare time' to update the map with new places that have been added since the map first went up. That would be a couple of books worth, I think. :-)

By Stephen Mulligan on Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 02:50 pm: Edit Post

Don't really have anything to add re the discussion, but the map rocks!

By Janny Wurts on Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 03:50 pm: Edit Post

I have a LOT more drawings to add, too....time, time, goes off muttering to self - too many words left to write, too. ;)

By Annette on Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 06:07 pm: Edit Post

Janny is that more drawings other than the ones already seen that did not get linked to the map. Or new artwork to be scanned and added to the site?

Not that we have actually seen all the ones on the interactive map mentioned in the books yet, but would love to see some new drawings. :-)

By Janny Wurts on Friday, July 01, 2011 - 10:24 am: Edit Post

Annette, I'd have to take inventory - probably (possibly?) both - the delay is mine. I have to get them in order to send. (scanned and cleaned up)

By Trys on Saturday, July 02, 2011 - 09:55 am: Edit Post

I've done some updates to the map. I've added images to those popups that didn't have them and for which I had artwork. I also added some new popups with images.

Annette, as to "It would be nice if the grimward near Cainford could be put on the interactive map", the latest version of the map of Paravia that I have does not have this grimward indicated. Janny may have a newer one. :-)

The missing grimward was mentioned in Fugitive Prince

quote:

He took no careless step. But headhunters picked up his trail west of Cainford. He left five hounds dead, and two men, and limped on with bound ribs and a calf with a festering dog bite. The hedge witch he challenged at knifepoint for healing cursed his barbarian tongue, then tried to sell him an amulet snagged together from squirrel skin and the strung vertebra of a grouse.
Jieret refused her the price of a cut lock of his bronze hair.
"Twould be useful for bird snares," the crone muttered. She sniffled over her sticky decoction, then knotted a bandage over an ill-smelling poultice with vindictive and sharp ferocity.
"I like the birds free, and myself most of all." Jieret wanted to flinch at her handling, but dared not, with his dagger point pressed to her back. The crone's hovel had nesting sparrows in its eaves, and the pot on her brazier leaked. Poverty and townborn contempt for her simples had leached all her pride in her trade. Jieret harbored the cynical suspicion that any offering from his person would be sold back to headhunters by nightfall, twined into a tracking spell to trace him.
Despite his need, the crone put a grudge in her remedies. His leg swelled and ached. Through curses of agony, he tore the dressing away and soaked off the salves in a stream. Feverish, limping, he thrashed his way south through the brush. A second pack of tracking dogs winded his scent and burst into yammering tongue. Freshly mounted, their masters tried to run him to earth against the guard spells of a grimward, which no man living might cross. There, he might have perished, inadvertently killed by Fellowship defenses set to keep trespassers from harm.
But clan hunters from Taerlin heard the commotion and spirited him downstream in a boat.

Fugitive Prince pg 46 (pb 2007)

I completely forgot about that grimward, so if Janny could confirm where it is would be nice to see it on the interactive map so we remember.
