Well, while you are all out there grabbing Under Cover of Darkness to see what Atheran surprise is in store for you -

I will be here brain burning a new Athera story.....several ideas on the bubble, one on the Near Boil - but - if you have a wish list of what you'd LIKE to know about this world, this is the moment to yell - while things are crystallizing -

You never know what might turn up.

(back to the paint pot meantime)

Appreciate very much if someone out there would do a brief summary of the other Athera and/or "The Wars of Light and Shadow" related stories that are cureently available. Include a description of the type of publication, e.g. a volume of short stories or a stand alone short story, etc. and the recommended place to purchase each. I just have this feeling based on the many comments that I am missing out by reading only Janny's novels.
Thanks a whole bunch,
Frank

Frank,

The easiest way to see what has been published of Janny's short stories is to visit the Bulletins: Releases page where you will find pages for Current Releases, releases out in the last several years and a page for Upcoming releases. That said:

"Sundering Star" (Atheran related) appears in Under Cover of Darkness - Edited by Julie E. Czerneda and Jana Paniccia

"Finder's Keeper" appears in Fantasy Gone Wrong - edited by Brittiany Koren.

"Moebius Strip" appears in Elemental The Tsunami Relief Anthology: Stories of Science Fiction and Fantasy - Edited by Steven Savile,

"Child of Prophecy" (Atheran related) appears in Masters of Fantasy - edited by Bill Fawcett.

"Blood, Oak, and Iron" appears in Flights: Extreme Visions of Fantasy - Edited by Al Sarrantonio.

"Watchfire" also appears in this book and was coauthored by Janny and Ray Feist.

"Last of Her Kind" appears in Fantastic Companions - Edited by Julie E. Czerneda

I've listed all of the recent short stories as I highly (HIGHLY, mind you) recommend that you track down the others as the other stories, are excellent and well worth the read. In other words, imo, you'd be missing out on by not reading these stories as well. :-)

There's also this page that lists all of her short stories over the years: http://www.paravia.com/JannyWurts/website/Books/ShortStories/ShortStories.html

I'd love to know more about the circumstances surrounding Kamridian s'Ffalenn's demise in Kewar. Or Ciladis in the wake of the Paravian's disappearance. Or the story of the blind lady in Jaelot. But I'm especially keen on Kamridian's story.

By Janny Wurts on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 12:22 pm: Edit Post

There will be yet another Atheran story called Reins of Destiny, probably for release this December in a fantasy anthology -- I've signed contract for it, just waiting for the final details on what to post here.

YES - if you read the related stories it will give you a window into what you are seeing in the novels. Each one fleshes out a facet (and sometimes even, previews) a major unfoldment that the story will cover - but if you have access to the short material, you will see it coming in the main novels in FAR MORE detail than you would if you looked at the novels, alone. Definitely TK and Stormed Fortress will have more meaning, with the short material under your belt.

I am not making it impossible to see these issues from the main story alone - but when the main story covers these points, there will not be NEARLY the insight and detail, as the focus of the novel can't shift sideways to accommodate.

You will always gain from the short material - as the focus in those bits is spotlighting certain areas, and all of the material directly connects.

I am making the effort to compile more material like this as it adds immeasurably to the universe...often when people ask, or guess, they are so far short of the Actual - that it's fun as heck to provide the real unfoldment of what DID happen....so - yes, the short stories do that.

Two available now, one pending (probably in December) and - one about to be written...

Trys,
Thank you very much for the info and the insight. You've done much of the work for which I am grateful. As you suggest, it shall be done. I'm running out of books on hand to read while I await SF and the short stories of Janny and the other renowned authors should fit the bill nicely.

I would like to read about the circumstances around the death of Marin Eliathe and the fall of the Justice Tower @ Ithamon.

By Laneth Shadow-Walker on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 10:29 pm: Edit Post

My mind can't get past wanting to know more about the F7, so I'm seconding HJ's request on Ciladis.

Whether we hear of him before or after the Paravians disappear, I don't mind.
I think that his quest to search for them might yield too many questions and too many answers at the same time, so perhaps a recounting of an important even he was involved in when the Mistwraith first arrived on Athera?

We know that Traithe was the one who sealed the Gate, that Sethvir, Asandir & Kharadmon(? he died during the uprising? or Luhaine?) were still "field agents" before the paravians left.

This would also present a glimpse into the machinations of the F7 while they were still a complete unit, with Davien still present.

That would get my mind racing!

(Janny's said that we will eventually hear of the F7's past, so this is one way of getting a glimpse at them, without having to go back too far into their lives *evil grin*)

By Hunter on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 10:59 pm: Edit Post

Some other options:

1.The sacking of Ithamon by Khadrim and Seardluin in Second Age 3651 when Kharadmon lost his body and also Athera lost her High King - Cianor Sunlord.

2. The first drake dream which resulted in the arrival of the Paravians.

3. A dissertation on the n-dimensional, non-Newtonian time/space continuum in which this world is set with particular reference to the dual nature of energy and matter and the conversion between the two..

By Trys on Monday, February 19, 2007 - 06:06 am: Edit Post

quote:

dual nature of energy and matter and the conversion between the two

Hmmm, as I understand this is an aspect of current theories of physics on this planet. The idea being that matter is simply energy vibrating at a frequency that results in what we call matter and that there really isn't a difference. As to conversion it's just a matter of frequency change. :-)

Trys

By Hunter on Monday, February 19, 2007 - 07:53 am: Edit Post

Ah yes.. frequency change such as Asandir upstepping to travel via lane transfer.. how might one effect this.. :-)

The dual nature comment was exactly to indicate that it's two sides of the same thing and that going from one aspect to the other requires said frequency change.. and how one might do that..

Story requests - some things will "appear" in Stormed Fortress...

some requests fall too near the direct line of the novels, as these themes will be integral in the future.

Some will be illuminated in Reins of Destiny (coming to you in December, in an anthology to be announced, the countersigned contract arrived YESTERDAY.

hmmmm - King Kamridian- that's not a happy story!!! And you already know the ending, so where's the surprise?

The story of Cianor Sunlord is about a novel's worth....and of course, it's not window dressing he's mentioned in the series.

All the rest of the stuff's in the pot, mulling!

I would like to see a bit of early Dakar, how he came to be Asandir's apprentice. =)

By Auna on Tuesday, February 20, 2007 - 05:11 pm: Edit Post

How about something during the time the humans first arrive on Athera? While that is an entire book I'd love to read someday (hint!), I'd love to see even a snippet, that's bound to be very eventful.

Anything F7 related! (Would we even like these guys before they were dragon called?)

The reckless antics of a young Dame Dawr ;) (or anything on the brothers).

How did the waystone and skyron crystal come to be?

How did the Biedar get on Athera?

By starstorm on Tuesday, February 20, 2007 - 07:38 pm: Edit Post

I'll second Konran's request. Dakar is SUCH a cool character, and we know very little about his life before he became Asandir's apprentice.

By HJ on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 08:54 am: Edit Post

Hi Janny,

About Kamridian: I might be mistaken but I can't remember (and I've only just re-read Alliance of Light) any mention of why he came to be in Davien's maze. Arithon didn't really have any choice about entering but I've always wondered what reasons there could be for anyone to willingly enter the maze. I'm sure I read somewhere that other men/beings had also perished in Kewar. It's not that I want to read the grisly details of poor Kamridian's end. More that I wonder what drove him there.

Over and above this, I'd like to read about Davien first conceiving of the maze and building it but I guess that would reveal his intention for creating it in the first place. Again, unless I'm mistaken I don't think that's ever been described in any of the books. I'm hoping we'll find out in due course...

I've always wondered why Davien built the maze, the 5 Centuries Fountain and the pit at Rockfell. It's almost as if he had everything planned in advance...!

By Auna on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 01:07 pm: Edit Post

I would love to know more about Davien, but I figure that's gonna be done slowly in the books since he's our big mystery figure!

Were the clans separate from the rest of humanity or were they all one bunch that happened to segregate after coming to Athera?

By Janny Wurts on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 07:55 pm: Edit Post

Oh, and the mull list grows!!!

Some stuff's already answered! (as in, go get Under Cover of Darkness, Fantasy Masters, and later on --- another antho coming in December....

Some stuff's in Stormed Fortress...

Some stuff's gonna out in Arc IV...

Davien - he built Kewar, the Five Centuries Fountain - for a connected reason....this will doubtless out in due time. And it's connected to Why King Kamridian chose the maze....

Other ideas on the Mull - Verrain's story is pretty cool.

But I probably won't do that one right yet for this shot.

Oh, I am gonna have Fun with this one!

Right now - I have the three paintings that will composite for the cover of Stormed Fortress ALL UNDERWAY IN THE PAINT.

The icons for Fugitive Prince, Grand Conspiracy - also underway in the paint...

Inside the ring shots for FP and GC, are in transfer....soon to be in paint.

And PG's in the ring shot - in pencil drawing, yet.

Background for Grand Conspiracy - still to be designed....that's the one that's least formed up - have I ever had so many little paintings going at once - feels like a galaxy of them....I had to put a shelf up behind my drafting table to put the wet ones to dry!

Figure you will have something to see here by March!

Thanks Janny. Can't wait! x

By Aria on Friday, February 23, 2007 - 06:10 pm: Edit Post

Oooh wish list. Too big a list. ;)

Ciladis after the Mistwraiths conquest. Although that might appear in the books.
Sethvir accepting the Earthlink.
Creation of Rockfell, not the why so much as the how and the madness of creating the stair. Even Kharadmon seemed amused with Davien's actions there.
Fall of Luhaine at Tirans, think it was Tirans...
The rebellion, or at least the realisation that Davien stirred it up. Again that might appear...
Why Methisle has so many cats!
Verrain! I like Verrain and we don't get to see a lot of him poor man, trapped with Methspawn and cats for company...
Death of Cianor and Kharadmon, 'bit morbid but sounds interesting...
Kamridian, again might appear....
Dakar and the prophecy at West Gate! That or him meeting Asandir et.al. for the first time.
The F7 actually working together before the hornets nest was stirred/Deshthiere arrived.
Something on Dascen Elur?
A day in the life of a random character. :D
Gah too many thoughts and wonderings. :-)

But all I can say Janny is how do you find time to sleep? And I second HJ's response of can't wait. :-)

By Hunter on Monday, February 26, 2007 - 10:02 am: Edit Post

Some others..

- the circumstance of Elaira's birth, ancestry and orphaning
- story of the death of Lysaer's father's first wife and daughter
- Desolation of Kaithtarr
- Crafting of Alithiel and other great Isaervian swords - not the Asandir second hand story in GC, the crafting as the Paravians intended, including the mighty singing of the Unicorns to lay the starspells.

By Blue on Friday, March 02, 2007 - 02:22 am: Edit Post

Wishlist, oh gads, where to begin, and how to stop?

Lirenda - what made her the lonely, ambitious heir to the Prime?

Talera - Janny has mentioned that she originally wanted to start CotM earlier, with the execution of one of Arithon's uncles, and the affect this had on her outlook.

Speaking of Talera, what was the deal the Rauven mages made for her dowry, the birth of elementally gifted children? Especially considering she was being offered as the bride of one of the participants in the most deadly and heated feuds on Dascen Elur.

Death of the s'Ellestrion heir - why/how did s/he die on the World of the Red Desert, especially since Wisdom would be a GREAT trait to have in play between the clans and the townies.

I would like to second the nomination of Khamridian's end as a possible short story.

Something about Sulfin Evend's early life, or even better, where/how did he get the clan blood in his family.

A brief story about one of the Great Drakes, and how s/he ended up in a Grimward.

Elshian and the crafting of the Masterbard's Lyranthe.

How Dakar got the nickname of "The Mad Prophet."

The arrival of the Paravians, and the reaction of the Drakes to such a beautiful, sublime gift from Ath.

I second the nomination of the crafting of the Isaervian swords as another possible story.

Dascen Elur, post exile of Lysaer and Arithon, and the peace Mak s'Ahelas forced between Karthan and Amroth. I can imagine Lysaer's dear old daddy having a stroke because of denied vengeance, which he seems to have mistaken for justice.

Speaking of Mak s'Ahelas, would he try to engage any kind of scrying or other such means to get an idea if Arithon is all right? It might be interesting to read about an attempt of his to find this out.

By Laneth Shadow-Walker on Friday, March 02, 2007 - 05:29 am: Edit Post

Speaking of the deal between Rauven and Talera, I want to know if the elemental children would extend beyond light and shadow to the typical elements of Earth, Fire etc.

It would've been interesting if other elementally gifted children had arrived.

Or maybe Janny has a different way looking at the base elements of creation, what with Shadow & light and all, maybe there are other features of reality that Janny could create into an elemental mastery.

Authorial Musing going on....where do I want to play next for the interrim story I get to produce for playtime....

The original reason for the division and reunification of Shand and West Shand - there's definitely a story there, but can it be fit into less than novel length....hmmm.

Verrain's always kicking to get on stage - one of these days I'll succumb.

The origins of s'Dieneval - oh yes, there's a definite story there!

Mankind's arrival - what an event - perhaps too big a tapestry, though...not a simple moment, oh no! ? But some interesting and unlikely heroes come forward.

The fall of Mearth - messy, messy.....definitely messy!

Dakar's early history - if you like the melodrama of an infant prodigy.....

Shehane Althain's requital.....maybe, maybe....

flip for it?

By Hunter on Tuesday, May 15, 2007 - 12:18 am: Edit Post

I would vote for the fall of Mearth as first preference, Shehane Althain's requital second.

By Blue on Tuesday, May 15, 2007 - 01:38 am: Edit Post

I'll second Hunter with the Fall of Mearth.

There was so much that tantalized as Arithon and Lysaer passed through, and it STILL makes me wonder what happened to it. AND it is connected to Davien, my second favorite enigma in WoLaS - Arithon remains number one.

By Angus on Tuesday, May 15, 2007 - 08:13 am: Edit Post

If this is a democracy, and I have no illusions that it is a democracy, I will join the voices of my comrades Hunter and Blue. However, I believe that we are ruled by the whims of our every-so-benign dictatrix, the Grand Tale Spinner, the Maker of the Magnificiant Muse, the Wonderful Wurts (I'm angling for a job in her Ministry of Truth). So, what she says goes.

BUT WE WANT MESSY, MESSY...DEFINITELY MESSY! Messy is fun. Just ask my kids when they play in the sandbox.

I would love to know about the fall of Mearth. And, is there any chance it has of being "cleansed"? Would be helpful in getting a s'Ahelas back to Athera if it were, given how close our main characters came to buying a piece of Mearth real estate.

By Winter on Tuesday, May 15, 2007 - 09:32 am: Edit Post

Well I'll try to even out the voting by going for Shand/West Shand. The division and union of Kingdoms, could it happen again? The answers to why the Kingdom borders are what they are, and why specific royal lines were assigned to them. Was there another royal line for West Shand? If so, what happened to them? If not, how was it governed and is it a model for post-s'Ellestion Melhalla?

1# Verrain
2# Dakar

While all the other subjects would be interesting i'd still love to hear more about these two characters. Verrain preferably because Dakar has more of the spotlight at the moment.

Both these characters have an interesting backstory, they're still active in Athera now and they may have important parts to play in the future.

Apologies again if i get it wrong... but i think in one of the books it was mentioned (or suggested) that Verrain was used to balls and court, that sort of thing. I'd love to know what he was like originally as it sounded like he didn't recieve mage training from as early age like Dakar. Also, if i am right, i wonder how he and Lysaer would get along as it would seem they'd have similar backgrounds. (If i am wrong about all this it just shows i need a book about it to correct me)

If I claim to have multiple personalities can we all vote? :-)

P1)"Verrain!"
P2)"Aye!"
P3)"Yes, Verrain"
P4)"Certainly"
P5)"I concur"
P6)"I love Verrain, he's so dreamy"
P7)"Verrain is rubbish, I'll Kill yo..."
*sounds of fighting, muffled shouting and a shoe striking something unmentionable...*
P7"mmmmffh mhhhmm mahhhh"
*...also LOTS of whimpering.*
P6)"He means 'Yes, I would like Verrain too please'"

The moral of this story; don't mess with my feminine side when she's making eyes at a hottie.

Before anyone gets worried i don't really have multiple personalities :-)

(To himself, 'yes i told them... yeah i think they bought it.')

I always thought true democracy was a myth:

Waiter "Here you are sir, we will make you ANYTHING you want to eat"
Me "anything?"
Waiter (bored)"yes anything."
*then he hands over the menu*
*I look at the menu*
1) lives in the sea (eel)
2) lives on land (snake)
Side orders
1) bull****
2) See above - that's it.

Vive la two party system.

Two party system: only in the US, my friend.

Up here, in the Great White North, we have five. One is centrist (Liberal), one right (Conservative), one left (New Democrats), one green (Green, what else! no seats yet, though) and one separatist (Bloc Quebecois, only runs candidates in Quebec, and are waning politically).

At least you have one clear choice. Bad, or worse. We have choices between thieves, simple minded idiots, idealists, more idealists, and people who don't know a great county when they see one.

By Matthew on Tuesday, May 15, 2007 - 04:30 pm: Edit Post

I'm british, i'm only picking on america because it's easy. Our system isn't much better lookign at it from a 'True Democracy' viewpoint.

Politics is alot like mud wrestling. No one who enters it stays clean for long.

By Hunter on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 - 09:00 am: Edit Post

Verrain also wore fashion several centuries out of date if I recall correctly. It's a wonder he's sane at all with just meth-snakes to keep him company along with several dozen cats.

My reasoning is simple - Paravians, I want to read about Paravians.. not these boring humans.. the exalted beings, besides which we are but pale shadows

Janny - any chance of a story around Naming of the Winter stars, the solstice rights at Caith-al-Caen, or even the first arrival of the Paravians on Athera? Or the making of the Isaervian swords?

By Janny Wurts on Friday, May 18, 2007 - 02:01 pm: Edit Post

Ahhh - squinting at vote lists, and excited suggestions.....

Some of these would be a NOVEL!

And some you've turned down - chortle - have you ANY IDEA what you'd be missing?

(Author tease!!!!! Author tease!!!!! Bolts out, still playing with options.)

By Matthew on Friday, May 18, 2007 - 03:42 pm: Edit Post

I doubt we're missing anything because i'm sure you're going to cover all the different stories eventually... even if we have to break your ankles and keep you captive in a remote cabin a la misery :-)

Note: i'm not a dangerous stalker with violent tendancies, total joke =P

By Hunter on Saturday, May 19, 2007 - 02:46 am: Edit Post

Janny - are all these story options intended to see the light of day at some point, in some format?

By Janny Wurts on Saturday, May 19, 2007 - 08:30 am: Edit Post

Hunter - I sincerely hope so.

If not in their own right, then as an unveiling scene in a larger work.

Often the ones that pop when a story opportunity comes along are the ones that seem to unveil a larger facet of something about to pop in the series proper....which is always fun, and why the sidebar material always fleshes out the larger picture.

I have to choose for ones that will open new areas, or deepen the reach of ones only hinted at but -- at all costs -- stay Away from ones that would crash the gates on material I know will be opened up wide in the next two arcs (or in Stormed Fortress for that matter! Yeah, you'll get a few....)

So there are some hot ticket areas I know I'll have to avoid, because - well, they're coming anyhow, because in some manner that thread intersects the coming story and affects it strongly.

Right now, the stories that are created will appear scattershot, as the opportunities happen. (You have Reins of Destiny coming in December). Each one is a bit tricky, because it snap freezes areas of the back history, and I have to organize my notes to be sure I've included all the going factors, in right order!!!

Eventually, I'd like to put together a collection of such works, appended to a novella that's set in Athera or something - but - opportunity for the series itself may have to expand, first - or something else crop up - in order to position the idea and have (yes I want ot see this!) all those stories appear under one cover.

It could be that I may write a supporting novel that stood totally alone from the series - but as I have a contract for book I arc IV, (title to be announced, chuckle) this can't happen instantaneously.

Such ideas have to compete with other one off novel ideas, like Hell's Chasm, that I also want to write. (a heap of those are piling up, too). Alot depends whether I pull in other opportunities to paint.

Think art book, down the line. With a huge Athera section.

One needs an enthusiastic publisher, too. Grin.

By Angus on Saturday, May 19, 2007 - 09:59 am: Edit Post

Janny: Ever considered cloning?? Sounds like you have a lot to do.

I still want to hear about Mearth, but Verrain is really coming up in my mind too.

I have yet to find a character you have created that is uninteresting. I have hated some of them, but they are always interesting. Verrain is a great enigma, and has received very little press compared to the Mad Prophet.

Dakar's childhood? Nah. Give us Verrain, if you can't (or won't) give us Mearth.

By Matthew on Saturday, May 19, 2007 - 01:46 pm: Edit Post

Well we all know why Dakar became a spellbinder, he had that rogue talent of prophecy.

I think an explanation of how and why Verrain became a spellbinder would be very interesting :-) As i said before i got the impression he was an adult so what motivated his choice to help? how did the fellowship go about contacting him? if there was something, like with dakar, that marked him out from others what was it?

By Laneth Shadow-Walker on Saturday, May 19, 2007 - 07:31 pm: Edit Post

My guess as to how and why Verrain become a spellbinder is because he has or had a natural affinity with animals and the taming of methuri came as second-nature to him.
His training in magecraft enhanced his perception and ability in understanding animals, hence his post at Methisle.
(Also might explain why there's so many cats there...they might have the most to say and the most interesting conversations out of many animals...
Sethvir & the other F7 can speak to Traith's crow, so why couldn't Verrain speak to the cats in the same way?)

I really want to know about the fall of the justice tower in Ithamon.

That really would be a novel, I suspect, but so many questions does it raise!

Laneth i'm fairly certain the raven is different from most creatures because it's an aspect called into being by Sethvir to help Traithe. Still, i like the theory :-) Dr Dolittle strikes again.

Easy for you to say, advance-copy-already-read-twice guy. And, in the words of Forrest Gump, "that's all I have to say about that".

Forgive my petulance, but the rest of us are entitled. Hmmpph!

T-minus 3 months, 19 days...

"rip roaring finish of Alliance of Light."

Now could that be a hint? Wouldn't it be lovely if the Alliance really was finished!

Here it is - I've just had a new short story accepted for an anthology titled CATOPOLIS forthcoming sometime next year from DAW books. The editors are Marty Greenburg and Janet Deaver-Pack, and the story is titled Cat Call 911.

As I have finalized dates, and information I will post them.

Pause, deep breath - yippeee! another brand new story finds a home.

SWAT! another deadline, down for the count...in short, another short hits the finish line. Only the final polishing to go...satisfaction, you betcha...I had to pause with some of the Novel's characters sliding into SERIOUS trouble, and throwing the blanket over their clamoring to get this short piece off was - rather - trying.

They kept right on yelling in the background, see...

Ah the wild and wooly trials of writing...
