Paravian Language Translation

Janny Wurts Chat Area: Wars of Light and Shadow Contest: Paravian Language Translation

These two lines will appear in the book. Go for the translation ahead of time:

"Nai ffiosh e'elen sliet-th'i, my wild falcon!"

"Ath iel i'cuelan allesstairient, Teir's'Ffalenn."

Nai - I got nothin'.

ffiosh - nosh = coffer, based from "moarnosh" meaning "coffer where greedy people store valuables", and we have "moar" mentioned as being "greedy"

i'esh - "nest, haven"

...neither of which seem close enough to make me think there's a relationship.

e'elen - e' = "small"
el = "short"
en = "one"? (as in "one who", "aykrauken" vs. "aykrauk")
lien = "to love", though el'en works without fudging

sliet-th'i - 'i suffix indicates jest or flippancy
lie - "note struck in harmony"
li - "exalted, in harmony"
jierlieth - "thorn of worry"
"jieret" - "thorn", "jieri" - "spike", therefore "lieth" - "worry"?

"Nai, ffiosh, small short one, worry (joking), my wild falcon" (maybe telling him he worries too much =P)

I wonder if the "t-th" means anything by itself or if it's just a "letter" in the Paravian alphabet (as Janny said we'd be seeing someone with that character in his name)

Ath - "Ath him(it?)self, first"
iel - light
i'cuelan - i' is a statement of self/consciousness
an - "one" again
allesstairient - the most stubborn (though I notice two l's here where "alesstair" has only one... a trick? or typo? or language quirk?)

Ath (first?), light, statement of self-something-one, the most stubborn, Teir's'Ffalenn.

In the end I don't come up with anything different than I did the first time... I see why people had to have spokespersons to talk to the Paravians for them, getting into the mindset of how the Paravians think to try and understand their language gives me a headache! =D

*victory dance* I found "cuel"! "You are the enemy I never expected to meet." Judging from what little I know of Paravian grammar structure, I'm going to take a flying leap and guess that "cuel" is "enemy".

"Ath's light is the most stubborn enemy, Teir's'Ffalenn"?

D: I disappear off the 'net for a while (planning a major event takes up a lot of your time!), and come back to this? Whoa! Where do I need to send my info? :-)
