I just had one of those moments of hyper-reality where everything in the book comes to a screeching halt as Arithon and Dakar and Co. are inundated in a deluge of water from the next room.
I imagine them on break right now elsewhere in the house while the plumbing issues are resolved. Then at the mention of football, I saw them checking their fantasy football teams (because they would all be in a League together, no?) as they waited for progress to resume on 13 Set.
I was attending a continuing education course on interior paint color trajectory for the next year at the time. It must have been the paint fumes....
Sorry to hear you are are having to battle the house as well as the last chapter set Janny. Keep dreaming up new scenarios there, the workmen have to finish eventually, hopefully leaving you a leak free home.
Took the first scene to finish, have a shift of viewpoint for the next bit. Worked until I had that first section nailed down, because the mess with the workmen isn't done.
Plummer left/returning tomorrow - more jack hammering to make the hole bigger so he can work on the pipe. More dust, deafening noise - everything awful, all over again, except hopefully this time will cap it. How long this room will be unworkable, who knows. I will run a print out ahead, if I can, and work by hand in another room, if that's possible. The cats are not going to be happy at all.
So sorry about your plumbing, concrete, water woes. I cringe every time something goes wrong in our house and have to ask myself why am I putting myself through this stress. So ready for a yurt with a decent out house.
Well, yeah, a Lo Tech yurt on a huge spread of acreage off grid sounds real sweet, right now. It would at least be Quiet!
The jackhammering is done. We have patched pipe and now a patched drain (smacked that with jackhammer, thanks, plummer, you knew you were under the drain for the laundry and laundry sink, eh???). Immense amount of clean up in progress, and washer sitting on ply wood over immense pit in the floor. Lucky we were gonna redo the laundry anyhow - eventually, schedule permitting. (Hah!) That project's been on hold for lo, many years, Destiny's Conflict taking precedence.
Despite running around turning valves off and on like fool, I did work, today. Took the sequential notes for the scene I had planned to start, and hand wrote at the kitchen table, while the house vibrated under me. I got the scene well along - there is only the few lines of wrap up left - I may get that before I shut down, tonight. Then a little time to sleep on it, and do some touch ups, and it's on to the whopper I've had in notes for - holy cow - close to 25 years? Then the finisher which is blistering intense.
I have close to a third of 13 main down, at this stage.
The final two scenes to round this book up are already charted.
The repair list that hit us this month was off the charges - so much equipment and rolling stock broke.
I am grateful to have whittled it down to the solar hot water/my car/and Don's small printer.
Car can be started on next week, and at least I have the weekend to make tracks on the chapter, uninterrupted. It would be SO SWEET if I could have it wrapped by next weekend....
The only good bit about being hit at this stage, the action is pretty well nailed, in the planning, and the intensity of each scene falling together is at such a pitch, I could tune out the racket fairly well, when I had the chance to sit down for it.
Wow! Sounds great, Janny! You're a trooper to work under those conditions.
somehow plummer / plumber potentially in the same chat as Arithon strikes me as really weird...but then Athera towns must have plumbers or a potential inventor of plumbing or if this against the compact?
3rd scene in 13 main underway, now.
I wonder if someone in Chapter 13 be saying they felt the earth shudder, in reflection of some jackhammering going on in Janny's house?
"decent outhouse"... until you have to call the honey dipper. <g>
I was thinking of a small population (2 humans and assorted smaller 4 legged creatures), Privies can be moved and if I end up in a place that has rain and somewhat acid soil I wont's need to call the honey dipper!
3rd scene in Chapter 13 main is now complete; diving into the 4th - which is: drumroll: CULMINATION - the moment of peak event.
Draft of chapter page count stands at 17, which is about halfway.
Two scenes follow this one, both chain in reaction, stepping into finale denouement.
Earth may not shudder, but if you readers don't break a sweat from raced pulse, I'd better get me a new job. The pitch on this one reaches cracking intensity.
Everything else has led up to it. All the painstaking pieces.
This is exciting. I'm looking forward to it. Thank you, Janny!
I've got that fourth scene about halfway along, the tension's at white hot pitch. Exhausted, emotionally wrung out, calling it a day.
The pick up point will be easy, tomorrow morning. Not out of words, here, just brain fried.
Thanks for the updates Janny, it all sounds very tension packed. Is the fourth the last scene, or are the other two scenes included in Chapter 13 main?
My imagination is working over time wondering where all that is leading.
Fourth scene is nailed. I am exhausted. This is one of the most intense in the entire series, get ready.
Fifth and sixth scenes will top off Ch 13 main; they are in 'simultaneous action' so I will either interleave them, or use a view that encompasses both. Will configure that bit exactly overnight.
Then I have the two subchapters, one scene each, definitely denouement and wind down.
The final one liners are sketched into notes.
Work to finish is all cut out and laid in order.
:D:D:D such great news! I'm so curious!
The dovetailed fifth and sixth scenes to cap this chapter are now well underway. Hoping for a smoking day at the desk, tomorrow.
Chapter 13 main has hit 29 draft pages; I expect to wrap it in about another five, as the last scene dovetails with the current one's windup.
Maybe today, though - sigh - there's an errand slated for late after noon.
My god. :X The duct tape is over the authorial mouth....I can't wait till y'all read THIS!
Cannot wait to get a chance to read it.
And I've been doing so well fighting the urge to start another reread of WoLaS in favor of working through my backlog of unread stuff ... Anticipation is driving me to get an Athera fix. I don't know how much longer I can hold out. A sneak peek would probably be enough, though. Hint hint, madam author :-)
I finished out all but the last little bit of 13 main, expect to nail that bit today.
Will see what can be found for a sneak peek when I get the last pages of draft nailed: namely the two denouement scenes and one line snippets that follow.
13 main is nailed at 34 draft pages. Time to touch it up, then shove on.
Two denouement scenes, three one liners....the countdown to party moves on apace.
Thanks for the update Janny. Looks like you will have the first draft done well before Christmas.
Awesome news Janny. Party time!!!
Oh Annette, that's a tortured thought!!! I'd prefer to have the rest of it nailed down by end, next week!
What are your tea drinking habits Janny? Can we readers make you a cup of tea, please? In that way in which an unasked for cup of tea, applied at the right moment, makes your day better.
Hi James George - welcome here. Not really a tea drinker, it's Florida and hot! But in the day - it used to be Earl Grey, Constant Comment, or for herbal, Peppermint or Kiwi Pear.
Lady Grey with lemon then, iced. We need it hot here on Ireland's coasts. But we have books to reread to warm us too, for which you have our thanks.
When you are finished how about chilled, bubbly, and alcoholic?
Started "Curse......" Again, nearly half way through after two days. Feel happy to be in Arithon's company again.
Do you reckon, Janny that Destiny.... will be waiting for me before I need it or will I have to wait?
Hi Gill, I don't know if your schedule and the publisher's will coincide.
I am well along with the second last scene. I can hope they will settle on holding a pub date once I complete the last stage of the draft, but no guarantee they will stick to anything in stone until the work is in production and in the catalog.
Certainly this thread should keep you posted.
Last scene, final sub-chapter.
Thanks for the update Janny. Should not be long now, you have been thinking about how you would do that scene and end this arc for a very long time.
After all those years, did you change things around much?
The story draft is FINISHED - 985 pages, less glossary, before the polish tinkers out the dross.
I'll have the last two scenes to test read shortly.
