Author's copy - received! and is it GORGEOUS!!!!
Yours won't be far behind....a note: the UK release is immanent - but there's a wee snag in the USA.
The printed books get loaded onto a container ship. They will reach HarperCollins 260 in NYC - and IF they slide in at the wrong timing, the staff there is small. They said: could be the arrival will jam into their Christmas/Big Fall releases, and if that happens, triage: they won't be able to unpack them straightaway. They have said this 'delay' could extend to Jan 5th. AAAARGH! Circumstances beyond my control; feel my pain, I sure feel yours. Let's hope this scenario doesn't unfold/that they have incentive to get the books out faster....
If they don't: the e book should hit the system sooner (I have not checked, but...). Book Depository ships anywhere in the world, I think, postage free...and if you can get your hands on the book AND keep your preorder in place, that will help tone up the algorithm....in any event, a new sale IS a new sale, so field this any way works for you.
It's splitting me, holding back what I know is coming....and VERY SOON I will be posting up the RELEASE MONTH PREVIEW - which will be all of Chapter Set One.
When we get our feet back on the ground, post DragonCon, and after Hurricane Irma decides what she's doing. Stay tuned.
Thanks Janny for the update. Really looking forward to this one even if the east gate mystery is not solved ;-) And I have been watching for chapter 1...but did not want to hassle you :-)
Thanks for the update Janny, looking forward to that preview.
Latest update still says 01 October release date for South Africa.
A January 5 delay sounds dire indeed
We all ought to visualize the little old container ship getting tugged into the right place at the right time with the right people expecting its shipment....
Initiate's Trial was released end of October/early November was it not? Destiny's Conflict is being released the beginning of October, they can surely get the container unpacked and the books distributed before the Christmas rush. Janny needs those Christmas sales! All of them especially the USA ones.
Be nice for once to have a chance of getting some decent sales. We do not want them quibbling again over a hardback version of Song of the Mysteries.
And of updates, I hope Janny and Don are OK Irma is currently trying to blow them away!
HURRICANE IRMA is gone, Don, me, the cats, the bees, the bats - all well. House is fine, too, some very minor leaking under 2 windows in the upper story, rain driven in by high wind. Nothing a little caulk and some plaster repair won't fix. Structural damage to the screened pool area; it will require a contractor, but NOT US, NOT THE HOUSE OR BARN, will find a way to fix it in due course.
Fences all intact with a little minor repair, we have weakened fence posts that will need replacement, just our labor. And, holy cow, a LOT of stuff to sort and put away/clean up of tree debris, but all our oaks are standing. YAY.
Have power back, no phone, no cell network up, yet, just fiber optic internet, which cable is underground. I may be deployed for SAR now the roads are clear (lots of downed trees in the neighborhood.)
Given we are safe and powered, my work in Athera will resume stat.
Thank you all for your well wishes.
So pleased you are all well. Feel very sorry for the people on some of the islands. They have had a dreadful time
Thanks for the update Janny, glad everyone is safe and sound and you have power back.
Amazon says October 5th for Kindle version, October 1st for hardcover. Don't know when that changed, if it's an error, or related to the issues Janny described above.
Do, all, keep me posted as to when you are actually able to receive your books - the revolving dates thing has me in fits! And - I can't wait to hear your responses to the story itself!
I just took it as Oct 5th, Oct 1st is a Sunday, did not seem a likely release date. Australia gets it even earlier I am not going to complain, but not counting on it. Will ask Area 52 our local Sci-Fi bookshop down in Hobart just when they are expecting to get Destiny's Conflict. I would love to be able to read it next week.
I rang the bookshop, they have a release date of Oct 1st, being a Sunday they said they would have it in on the following Thursday, which is Oct 5th. Will give them another ring on Oct 2nd, just to check. Maybe they only get the books delivered on Thursdays?
Great news! In fact, all the friends I know in Florida are ok, so big relief there.
My response to the story (in advance) - holy awesome, now where's the rest??!! ;)
Still listed on amazon.ca (Canada) as November 21.
Words cannot express the extreme suckage that I am feeling at this moment...
On the plus side, I am really pleased that you and Don weathered Irma as well as you did. A bit of maintenance and clean up is a blessing, considering the stories out of the islands and the Keys.
Two killer hurricanes in one season. That's scary, and it's only mid-September.
Well, for what it's worth,
the Amazon dot com (USA) website
has altered its listing slightly.
Kindle is still 5 October.
But hardcover and paperback
no longer have release dates at USA Amazon;
they simply say
that the book has not been released yet,
just go ahead and pre-order here please . . .
Situation is not much better on the other side of the ocean. Release date at Bookdepository (ships from UK) was early October, than a couple of days ago I noticed that they changed it for Sept 18th (yay!), but still the book is only available for pre-order: "Available soon, pre-order now." Order status is "Awaiting publication".
So waiting is it still.
Is there anyone who already has the book?
PS: Even blaming this mess on Crowley does not make the situation bearable, which is usually my tactic when it's indeterminable how long I have to wait for something.
I have author's copies of the hardback, and yesterday, received author's copies of the Trade Paperback edition, so that would indicate the book is off press, and in process of distribution.
"On Sale Dates" generally mean, the book could be stocked but orders will not be filled (or arrive) until that day; but with all the internal conflicting information given to me - this title's confusion is without precedent, from my perspective. On sale dates were meant to make an even playing field for bookshops to have equal opportunity to gain sales from a new (big) release - not sure how tightly they're honored with regard for titles that are not (yet, there's always that fiercely held aim) block busters.
I just hope the 'earlier' by who knows release of the e book edition, worldwide, does not totally destoy my sales numbers in paper....author jeebies, there, since I know there are no plans to push this book at all; reader driven is the best kind of publicity, period, it results in the highest percentage of response.
Done my work; up to the book and the alchemy of you guys reacting to it, now. This book packs the biggest punches of them all, and my fingers are crossed that some sort of reader critical mass will move all the markers, this round.
Done my job. Focus is now on drafting Song of the Mysteries, and doing the authorial outreach that I can. And sitting TIGHT on my author excitement for what will be yours, in a fortnight!!!
I'm posting in the Facebook groups I belong to about the new book, so doing my tiny part!
Auna - not so tiny! I know there was a discussion started on FB about the preview chapter; and I have a fan page, there. Once upon a time there was a Wars of LIght and Shadows discussion group on FB, but not sure what became of it. Any activity helps, so thanks, that makes me happy.
I will be doing another AMA at r/fantasy on November 7th - so letting that word out is good, too.
I have a Kindle preorder already in and the hardcover at the top of my birthday (this month) and Christmas list. The books I really like I get both e and paper. Different reading experiences
I'm glad you all made it okay through the hurricane. I hope Piers Anthony and his wife are okay as well.
I pre-ordered the eBook on Google Play books; they show an October 5 release date. While I personally will be content to wait for the Amazon hardcover to arrive, I hope they come early for everyone's sake.
I'm scared to report this, but:
Barnes and Noble
has a pagemarker for Destiny's Conflict, Hardcover,
saying available January 23, 2018
And now, Amazon's USA website says
the paperback Destiny's Conflict has a publication date
of October 18, ... 2018 ?!
Paperbacks typically hit about a year out, so the paperback release date isn't anything strange.
It is just the mass market paperback, nothing to worry about, it usually comes out about a year after release of the hardback and trade paperback versions.
Waiting on the next book is alright. Have had it pre-ordered since Amazon first had a page for it. I don't particularly deal with goodbyes well. As long as we have books forthcoming in this series, I am perfectly fine to wait for them. When this series ends, it will be a sad happy day.
That being said, the one author that led me to Janny way back when....My lord, it has been 29 years ago now, was Tad Williams. I read Dragonbone Chair when it was first published in 1988 and found Janny very shortly after. Bought the three standalone Cycle of Fire books back in 1988/89. Then Master of Whitestorm a few years later in 92 and well pretty much everything since. The point is keep reading. Support the authors you like and the industry as a whole.
I promote Janny differently than most. Several years ago, Janny was very gracious to grant permission to use something from her beloved universe. I am a gamer. Have hundreds upon hundreds of friends in gaming. My profile lists her website and information about WoLaS. Even where my gamer tag comes from and what it is in the WoLaS universe. Talk to other players all the time about my gamer tag and what it means. Tell them about her other books too. Her art. Gets the word out. (Janny please please please consider audio books for the WoLaS series. Get that request a ton from people while gaming with them).
If there is more to do to bring her books to the forefront of everyone's minds, please let me know.
If audiobooks are ever a possibility I volunteer to read!
Audio rights for Light and Shadows, and also, for To Ride Hell's Chasm are owned by HarperCollins Voyager, UK - put the pressure on them. They have told me they have 'no plans' and refuse to revert the rights back to me.
I have 5 other titles available in audio: Sorcerer's Legacy, Master of Whitestorm, and all three Cycle of Fire books, separately: Stormwarden, Keeper of the Keys, and Shadowfane. Almost NOBODY knows about them, I don't see them mentioned about, even though they have stellar narrators. If the numbers of those titles start jumping, that is another means to get HarperCollins UK to sit up and deal.
Adrian - Ithamon - thank you and thanks to everyone else who is giving these books word of mouth. It matters a lot!
I am writing the last volume of THIS SERIES, true. I am ALSO writing related works that I hope to release in connection.
And in line after this series are other works that I am just as excited about.
When you read Destiny's Conflict (eight DAYS until its overseas release date) you are going to get blown away; and by the time I complete the last volume, you will discover: there is nowhere to TAKE this story further, unless various sections of history or future history are explored...and that will depend largely upon if there is a readership big enough to support it.
The fact the audio rights are in limbo is a CONSTANT thorn in my side. I can only hope the bang released when the contents of Destiny's Conflict go public shakes the mountain enough to rattle a landslide and mow down the resistant indifference.
I appreciate each and every one of you for supporting the project in your own way, along the path.
Oh wow Adrien, I'm a gamer too and my guild mates are the friends I've been telling about the new book.
I always wondered what authors thought about gamers using their names as in game characters. I used a lot of Dragonlance names back in the day before I became concerned and stopped doing that. Now as far as anyone can tell, I'm just Elm, a tree, not some shortened name of a powerful mage. :P
My original ESO character is Daliana Snow Walker, and my original in TES V:Skyrim was Braggen, I got a few inquiries about where both names came from.
Janny I am looking forward to one day reading that Verrain related short story. I know you have that one tucked away some where, waiting for the right time to release it.
Verrain's story is a lot more, at this stage, than a short; I've got a 72 page draft that will probably top at least 100 pages, when finished. I'm adding to it on the days I stall out with Song's draft; and I've resurrected another partial short that takes place WAY earlier with material in it that is relevant to Destiny's Conflict....so the plan is, chip away at them until finished.
I had help getting the other shorts formatted; when these get done, I will have to look at Calibre or whatever way I can get them converted to e formats.
Today I got a solid half day in at the desk before a collector visited to look at paintings. Old inventory converted to cash is a good thing - we've got repairs from Irma to handle in 3 weeks.
SEVEN days and counting down before I get to see how you people react to the newest novel...I'm splitting with suspense. It's been a long, long year's wait in a hot stew of anticipation.
I too would love to see Verrain's story come to light, I really want to know more about him. Throughout the series he seems to have had one of the more grim and thankless tasks so far and I hope his efforts are rewarded, he gets a moment in the sun so to speak within the story.
Verrain will have stage time in Song of the Mysteries, definitely.
SIX days - then I won't be 'a book ahead' of you folks anymore.
Janny, are you self-publishing the shorts? I've heard you can use Direct to Digital (D2D) and go all the way up until hitting Publish to get the various ebook formats. Calibre also works though it didn't like my Word document's drop caps while whatever magic KDP uses in its conversion worked to position them properly. Probably safer not to try those in an ebook anyway, but I was experimenting!
