The Sundering Star is a short story which takes place in the world of the main Light and Shadow series. It was released in the anthology, Under Cover of Darkness, (edited by Julie E. Czerneda and Jana Paniccia, published by DAW Books) in 2007.

Set around the time that Calum Kincaide used his great weapon (and hence preceding the events the culminated with the Great Drakes' calling what become the Fellowship to Athera), the story follows the Koriani initiate known as Jessian whose job it is to re-settle the native Biedar tribe on Scathac. However her plans to re-settle the apparently primitive natives goes awry when the Biedar take control of their own destiny and change the fate of humanity.

Jessian's World Fleet obligations are already in conflict with her Koriani objectives - Jessian's meeting with the Biedar gives her yet further conflicting objectives.

The events in Sundering Star take place prior to Calum Kincaide's detonation of his great weapon so precede the Second Age of Athera.
