Inspiration came from the fortress at St. Augustine, Disney World's "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride, and Florida's dramatic thunderheads. Models were art instructors posing with me as pirates defending our captured stronghold.

The navigation acts of the 1700s preyed upon profits from the colony's trade goods. Pirates preyed upon those goods in transit. This sea rover is preying upon the stolen goods he is supposed to be guarding. A rat is preying upon the twice stolen spoils. Parasites, indeed, take on many forms.

The new world offered surprising encounters to the intrepid gentlemen of fortune seeking sustenance in a foreign environment.

Most pirates drank, gambled, and wenched away any booty they acquired in a frenzied burst of debauchery. Perhaps a few frugal souls placed their fortune into the earth. Buried treasure might be considered "old style" investment banking. It's a tricky business to maneuver a heavy chest by yourself but, when all your friends are thieves, who do you trust?
