Disagreements among a pirate crew were resolved with pistols or swords ashore. Drinking on a small vessel crammed with a large crew of mixed origins and allegiances created heated disputes, so onshore dueling was a way to keep the arguments personal.

When sea rovers careened their vessels to keep their hulls free from barnacle growth that hindered speed, they were vulnerable to attack. Defensive positions were established for protection until the vessel scraped clean its foul bottom to become sleek and seaworthy again.

Pirates were hung for plundering at sea, but those who stole from pirates were not persecuted by the law. Many took advantage of the wealth secured by pirates, who spent their shares as fast as they acquired them. In the late 17th century, Port Royal, Jamaica was the richest city in the new world, funded by captured Spanish treasure, robbed first from Central American natives.
